I’ve had a ton of friends and family ask how to start their own blog. This answer is so complicated because there are so many things you need to do before you even get technical and start the setup process. So today, I’m going to teach you how to start your own blog. I’m here to walk you through the process from start to finish and make your blogging dreams a reality. Here are the 5 steps you’ll need to take to get going.
- Figure out what your will blog will be about and come up with a domain name centered around that.
- Buy a domain (www.myawesomeblog.com)
- Buy Hosting (this is where you blog will live)
- What Platform will you use? (WordPress, Blogger) *In this tutorial, we are installing WordPress*
- Buy or use a free theme you love.
So now you have decided your want to blog, what are you going to write about?
It’s important before you start to really know your focus and why you want to blog. I’m warning you now if you think this is just a get rich quick trick and you’re are going to make loads and loads of money in a month….stop right now.
Blogging is very, very time-consuming and takes a lot of work. I didn’t realize this when I started blogging but I quickly came to that realization. Thankfully, I had the passion to continue and pursued blogging despite the obstacles. If you are blogging just for fun or as a hobby…you are on the right track. Who knows, maybe you’ll decide to make it a business somewhere down the road. Right now, you are doing it for all the right reasons.
This is why you need a focus and to write about something you love and truly feel passionate about: Because that’s a motivation that won’t die out. Since I have several topics I love to write about, my blog is considered a lifestyle blog, but you may be obsessed with fashion, makeup, literature, technology, gaming, home decor, or food.
If you are passionate about one of these topics, that’s what you should be writing about. Are there 2 or more related topics you love? Then go with a blending. If you like and want to write about all the things, maybe consider a lifestyle blog. Think about what you are good at and what will keep you interested.
Tip: Some blogs do well as a “day in the life” blog, but most don’t anymore. May sure your blog is relatable to others and fulfills their needs, not just your own.
Step 1: How do I pick a domain name?
So you know what you want to write about, well that’s half the battle. And here comes the other half: What’s your blog going to be called? aka website name, aka domain name. This step took me forever to accomplish and you can’t move forward without it. Here are some tips to help you find a name you’ll love and that will stand the test of time:
- Make it easy to type: Don’t get all fancy with spelling and shorting words. No numbers or hyphens.
- Keep it short and sweet: The shorter, the better, is always true.
- Try and use a keyword: Dawndoesmakeup.com, myfashionobession.com, mytechdream.com
- Maybe add your location: If you live in a metro area maybe add it to the end, myfashionobessionnyc.com
- Research it: make sure it’s not taken or trade market already. That would be a bummer!
- .com is the way to go: If the name you want isn’t available but you just have to have that name, go with the next best extension. But you really want to try and make it a .com if you can.
Need more help? I love this site to help create your domain name. It’s called Panabee. All you have to do it try in the keywords you want to use and it will generate website domain names you may like. I actually used this site to create the name for this blog!
Simply type in some keywords:
TADA! You get a list of possible combinations and ideas. Even change the extension and see what else is available. It also tells you how much it will cost.
Step 2 and 3: Now that we have that all figured out, time to register your name and get hosting!
